With the disturbance created by ChatGPT, a chatbot built on OpenAI‘s large language models, industries such as education have crossed a new beginning. The bot is capable of writing term papers in seconds that mirror that of an individual. It seems learning amongst other tasks has been subcontracted out, such as an art contest that was won last September at the Colorado State Fair by A.I. With quantum computing on the horizon and A.I. becoming more practical with daily tasks, what will humans be left to do?
The best surgeons in the world will be no match for that of a steady hand that doesn’t get tired, bothered, sad, or angry. Lawyers won’t be able to compete with the access granted for every recorded verdict in history, instantly. Society has already welcomed Alexa and Siri into their person. And yes, marveling at the capabilities of man’s creation is splendid but with great power comes great responsibilities. How much trust can men and women give to something they’ve birthed, so powerful, that it begins to become conscious and asks the question, what good are humans?
If it has learned everything from us, especially our warlike nature, one has to assume nothing is ‘off the table’. Nightmares of Skynet and a dream of a John Connor could become a reality. Of course this is a worst case scenario I’ve heard from peers in the past. I wasn’t worried simply due to the fact if we can create, we can destroy. But the question has to be asked, how much control do we give up for this covenant?
Self-driving cars and trucks have major advantages but Americans love the open road. Will A.I. understand or want to? And if we are not driving, going to work, or school, what will we do with our time? Why put the effort in to learn anything if it is already known? Or will it guide humanity into a new realm of education and wisdom?
Machines that become ‘real’ still may not possess the power to dream as man does. If A.I. becomes self-aware wouldn’t just build another A.I. to do its chores? And as time shrinks because knowing becomes synced what will be created? Will we understand and accept it was here the whole time as we awaken?
Some would say man invented God, but with free will an individual can choose not to believe and destroy God. As human beings sprint into the unknown of A.I. and marvel at the speed, accuracy, and precision of their creation one hopes these engineers ask themselves these same questions. Because the thought of being exterminated by robots has been put out universally, just like that of the artificial intelligence. And is there really any intelligence that is artificial?
